Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos - C.B.T.U.

Until the late fifties, suburban transport in São Paulo was responsability of the railroads that served the city, that is, E.F. Sorocabana, Tramway Cantareira, E.F. Santos a Jundiaí and E.F. Central do Brasil. In 1957, Santos a Jundiaí and Central do Brasil were amalgamated in the R.F.F.S.A. (Rede Ferroviária Federal Sociedade Anônima), the federal railroad network. In 1965 Tramway Cantareira railroad was extinct. And in 1971 E.F. Sorocabana was incorporated to the São Paulo state owned railroad network, FEPASA. But the history did not end here: in 1984 the R.F.F.S.A. commuter lines were transferred to another federal company, Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos - C.B.T.U. (Brazilian Company of Urban Trains), which dealt only with suburban transport. This company lived up to 1996, when the Brazilian federal government decided to pass this company for the regional states administration. The São Paulo state government created the C.P.T.M. - Companhia Paulista de Trens Urbanos, (Paulista Company of Urban Trains) while in Rio de Janeiro the suburban services were attrituted to a new state-owned company, Flumitrens (Fluminenses Trains).
