In the mid-seventies, the old funicular system was replaced by a rack-and-pinion railroad in one of the Serra do Mar lines. At that time, the E.F.S.J. became the Santos a Jundiaí Division of R.F.F.S.A., the Brazilian federal railroad network. This photo shows freight trains step up and down the Serra do Mar in Paranapiacaba; one of them is being pulled by two rack electric locomotives, built by Hitachi in Japan.
