In the evening of April 3, 2003, TV news showed very sad scenes: poor unemployed people dismantling manually the once luxurious E.F. Araraquara Budd cars at Boa Vista station from the former Companhia Paulista - like ants would attack the carcass of a big dead animal! This photo, shot in the same day by Lalo de Almeida and published in the following day at the Brazilian newpaper Folha de São Paulo, shows a Brazilian drama: should we mourn those legendary cars, one of the last symbols of the Golden Age of the Brazilian railroads, or mourn such people, who are forced to steal in order provide food for their families? This image is a spectacular symbol of Brazil post-globalization: the triumph of savage capitalism over people and tradition.
