A quite enthusiastic reception to the first diesel-electric locomotive that arrived to the Aquidauana station, during the late fifties... Note the huge piles of firewood in the background. As coal is very rare in Brazil, steam locomotives were fed with that fuel. No doubt that the dieselization of this railroad was really necessary! Apparently the photographer took this photo from the cabin of a steam locomotive; part of the tender can be seen in the left side of the photo. The original photo is in the January 1960 issue of the Revista Noroeste; copy is courtesy of Ricardo Frontera, from Bauru, SP.
