A 3000 HP electric locomotive, built in 1949 by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry. It was nicknamed "Pimentinha" (pepper), probably because of its red colour. These locomotives were built during the huge modernization and eletrification program carried out by the São Paulo Railway/E.F. Santos a Jundiaí during the late forties and early fifties. Fifteen locomotives like that were built in England and exported to Brazil between 1949 and 1950. In 1955 an extra unit was built in the Lapa works of the E.F. Santos a Jundiaí using spare parts; only the steel frame was additionally bought from the British manufacturer. Some main features of this famous machine: maximum speed, 100 km/h; continuous power, 2,400 HP; one-hour rating, 3,000 HP (5 motors at 600 HP, 2,700 volts DC); peak power, 4,800 HP. Regrettably those units were retired from service in the end of 1996, following the privatization of this section of R.F.F.S.A., which belongs now to M.R.S. Logística. Their fate still is unknown; at this moment they are abandoned in several switchyards along the lines of the former E.F. Santos a Jundiaí lines. No concrete preservation proposals are known at this time. This kind of locomotive, that was specially designed for the E.F. Santos a Jundiaí, was also delivered to Spanish, Indian and Australian railroads. The Spanish units are also out of service, but in great shape, being preserved in museums and pulling tourism trains, like the Tren de la Fresa (The Strawberry Train) between Madrid and Aranjuez! Life was really so much easier to these Spanish sisters... This photo was originally published at Revista Ferroviária.
