The Evangelista de Souza-Samaritá section of Mayrink-Santos was electrified between 1967 and 1975. Its electrification system was fed by two rectifier power stations, one located in Evangelista de Souza and another one, shown in this photo, near Acaraú station, deep in the heart of Serra do Mar. In the end of 1975 a tropical storm damaged severely the Serra do Mar section of Mayrink-Santos, including its electrification system. Repairs were huge and demanded many months. However, electrification was not restored, probably because there were plans at that time to perform a major overhaul in this branch, including line duplication, mixed gauge and 25 kVCA electrification. Line duplication and mixed gauge between Mayrink and Paratinga were indeed completed in the early nineties, but electrification was postponed many and many times. After the privatization of FEPASA, in 1999, the new company administration decided to scrap all electrified lines and gave up on all projects of new electrified lines, deciding by full diesel traction.
