This is a V8 General Electric locomotive, made in February 1947 for the legendary Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro. Its name is Eng. Francisco Monlevade, as an homage to one of the Company's most renowned engineers. The same kind of locomotive, with its original livery, can be seen at the Companhia Paulista page. In this photo, taken in November 1988 by Kobayashi, this locomotive has the second FEPASA livery, red with white stripes. The train is departing from the beautiful Estação da Luz, in São Paulo. This locomotive has the Brazilian record of railway speed - 146 km/h, too humble for the international standards, but such an achievement taking in account the problems of local railroads. In the late eighties, FEPASA tried to re-stablish a good passenger transportation service, with revamped stainless steel cars. The same rolling stock seen at the E.F. Araraquara page. Unfortunately, this service revealed to be commercially unfeasible after some months of operation. This photo was originally published at Revista Ferroviária.
