In 2010, ILW and the Portland Shops collaborated on a streamlined (Portland built the carbody and trucks, then ILW installed the electronics and prime mover) diesel-electric locomotive to test some of Portland’s diesel radial truck prototypes. After successfully testing those trucks, it kicked around the system on various low-traffic branches until 2021, when it was modified in the TdM shops into a passenger locomotive – with a steam generator – for the just-purchased Algoma Southern (exx-Algoma Central) Railway.
The ALSO put it into service as power for the revival of the Algoma Central’s old stopping train, and it continues in that service today.
