In 1879, the PV&T leased the Suncook Valley Railroad to use use its trackage from Gossville Junction to Suncook as part of a cutoff around Concord, NH. As part of the PV&T, it was operated as two sections; the line south of Gossville Junction was dispatched as part of the PV&T’s Portland to Boston mainline, while the section north to Pittsfield (extended north to Barnstead after the lease) was operated first as a subsidiary, then as a branch line.
When the PV&T electrified, the southern section of the railroad (now known as the Suncook Cutoff) was included, but the northern section kept using steam locomotives until 1951 when the last class 6 mogul was replaced with a RS-1.
After WW2, online business dropped off like a stone, and the northern half of the line was abandoned in 1960. The Suncook Cutoff remains in service as of 2025, serving container traffic and Amtrak passenger trains going to and from Portland, ME.
