OSW trackmobile #1492 in trackmobile orange

When the G&G took over the CN’s line to Owen Sound, Ontario, they also bought the stub of the CP’s line to Owen Sound, then connected the two together at the mouth of the Sydenham River/the south end of the harbour. There wasn’t much traffic originating/terminating on the east side of Owen Sound, and the trackage was in poor enough condition so that, in 2023, running a locomotive on it was prohibited.

Instead of simply abandoning the line, the OSW purchased a used Trackmobile to move cars over to the west side of Owen Sound, and operated it as the Owen Sound switcher for two years before the last factory closed.

OSW 1492 was a used TM Magnum, producing maybe 230 HP on a good day, which is powerful enough to slowly pull two loaded boxcars up to the previously mentioned industrial park, but still fast enough to drive back down to the harbor in finite time.

When the last shipper vanished, the OSW embargoed the line and sold 1492 to a grain elevator in western Canada, where (presumably) it is operating today.
