The original PV&T engine classification was to use the number of the first engine delivered in an order for the class. When the electrics started to arrive, they were split between this classification scheme and a new one with a letter sequence for the class (A:first,B:second,…) with, optionally, a numeric suffix for variations in the class. When diesels started to arrive on the system they were put into another classification scheme; the prefix DL, followed by a numeric sequence for the class. (All of these classifications can be suffixed by ‘r’ or ’m' to indicate rebuilt units.)
The split in the electric classification is somewhat vague, but the general rule seems to be that small switchers use the numeric scheme, while larger orders use the alphabetic scheme.
Passenger equipment uses yet another classification scheme for added confusion!
